Description: For sale is a set of 2 framed crazy quilt samples from, most likely, the early 1900s. The quilt samples have rich wintery colors in avocado green, taupe, cranberry, navy and dusty blue. The sections of fabric are hand stitched in a method that is both functional and decorative. The pieces are mounted on burgundy matboard and are framed in a tasteful gold frame that leans toward the deep orangey gold color (as opposed to yellow or green?). The molding has a scrolling leafy pattern along its front. The backing paper is black and one has multiple small tears in it. They are both fitted with sawtooth hangers rather than wire. The hangers are attached so that they are oriented as pictured in photo#1. On the back of one is a typed section of the family tree of the creator of the quilt. The embroidery on the quilt pieces appear to ready, S. E. L.", "M. E. V.", Mr and Mrs R G W", and possibley "Ina Z". None of these initials seem to correlate with the listed family tree but the Calysta mentioned in the paper appears to have been a beloved Nashville grandmother and artist. The condition is outstanding considering the pieces were probably framed in the 1970s or 80s. Several of the backs of the frame's corners have chips and scuffs that can't be seen from the front (I'm happy to provide photos). There is a partial finger print on either the edge of the glass or mat (see last photo). The outer dimensions are 13 1/2 X 19 1/2" (has the 2 rectangle pieces) and 16 1/2 x 19". They are a lovely, tasteful touch of creative Americana!
