Description: [drop-title] Remarkable Vision Author: Pratt, Orson Title: [drop-title] Remarkable Vision Publication: Liverpool: R. James, Printer, [1850] Description: Disbound. Very Good binding. Octavo. 16 pp. Removed from binding. Old folds; contemporary marginal bracketing in ink else a reasonably nice copy. In A Mormon Fifty, Crawley and Flake write, "Orson Pratt assumed the presidency of the British Mission in August 1848. Enjoined by Brigham Young to 'print, publish, and superintend the emigration,' he wrote sixteen tracts during the next two-and-one-half years" (35). A prolific pamphleteer, Pratt's tracts were issued in great quantity at a time where conversions in Great Britain were at their highest levels. In 1851, they would be collected in one volume. This is a fairly early edition of Pratt's Interesting Account of Some Remarkable Visions (first published in 1840), which was the first published account of Joseph Smith's 1820 vision. Crawley and Flake correctly place this as "one of the great Mormon books" for that reason (Mormon Fifty 18). This account was published three more times in New York in 1841 and 1842 and then one other edition by R. James in Liverpool in 1848. This present copy was the second Liverpool issue with one notable correction: where the church was organized--Manchester, Ontario County corrected in this issue to Fayette, Seneca County. An interesting and early piece of LDS history and no surprise that Pratt would have chosen it as a tract to aid in conversion. Remarkably uncommon in commerce. Crawley 395. Flake 6516a.
