Although neck veils do not appear in any dress regulations at the time, nor do they appear on any kit issued uniforms (1939-1941), they were worn by South African Soldiers in East Africa. A piece of khaki canvas cloth was attached under the helmet which acted as a protective neck veil. It appears that the use of the neck veil was never officially sanctioned. By September of 1941, no photographs show the use of the neck veil and it is assumed that an order from this period forbade the use of the veil.
