Description: Original rare British Martini-Henry P-1871 rifle Mk I checkered butt plate. In 1871, the British Military adopted the Martini-Henry Rifle with the production of the Mk I beginning in 1872 and only about 1,400 of these rifles were produced before the the Mk II rifles were introduced. The Mk II rifle was intended to be a cost cutting measure by simplifying the features of the rifle; of which included the switch from a checkered buttplate to a smooth one. Overall the buttplate is in good to very good used condition with the original checkering intact and mostly just some finish wear with some handling marks and some surface oxidation with light spots of surface pitting from longterm storage.Very rare piece to find, especially in this condition. Thanks for looking.
