Description: This is a fascinating drawing of a Grumman XSSM-N-6 RIGEL Guided Missile system competed in 1947. Ballistic missile development started in WWII with the V1 and V2 systems but overall had extremely limited range. So following the war the US began developing a missile system to be launched from the deck of a submarine to extend the range of the missile systems. The systems began with a ram jet engine design and evolved over the years of development. The Rigel guided missile system, being developed by the Grumman Aircraft Company, aimed to meet the Navy's goal to have an operational system by 1953. 1/9th Scale tests of the Rigel and Regulus systems proved difficult with nearly 50% of the test flights failing. These failures combined with the fact that the Rigel system had to utilize a large rail system and the success of the competing Polaris missile system ultimately led to its decline. The Grumman XSSM-N-6 Rigel system was ultimately ended in favor of the Polaris system. This particular drawing, completed in 1947, is an extremely early version of the Grumman XSSM-N-6 Rigel missile system. Shown on a conceptual truck mounted rail test platform. This drawing is 25.5" by 33" in size and are original pencil drawings of the concept and are really works of art in their overall depiction of the missile system. This drawing was created by a draftsman with the initials of CAN who worked for and drew for the US Army Air Corps and US Army Air Forces during WWII. This is the only known drawing of this version of the system to include the truck mounted launcher. A scale model of of the Rigel system sold at auction in excess of $1100 two years ago. Here is your chance to own an original drawing of the same system and only known drawings of the truck mounted concept. Also included are digital versions of the Naval Advisory Committee for Aeronautics report of the 1/9th scale tests as well as other four other PDF versions of background data on this system. If you purchase this drawing you will be fully informed on difficult to find data on the Navy's attempts to find a suitable answer to post WWII ballistic missile systems. If you like this check out my other auction for a later 1949 conceptual version of the same Rigel missile system. I have started this as a Buy it Now feel free to make offers.
