Description: Original handcolored antique copperplate engraved map of Rhode Island by Anthony Finley offers a fascinating window into early travel in the state more than 200 years ago. The map labels numerous turnpikes, many of which connected Providence with its hinterlands especially in the northern and western parts of the state where a large number of the textile mills were located. Turnpike owners imposed various fees for the passage of animals, vehicles or freight. Turnpikes weren't the only roads in the state, but they were often better maintained and offered more direct routes of travel. Among the turnpikes shown on the map are Chepachet Turnpike, Loisquisset Turnpike, Norwich Turnpike, Pawtucket Turnpike, Powder Mill Turnpike, Providence & Douglass Turnpike, and Rhode Island & Connecticut Turnpike. The map also labels Ten Rod Road which had been constructed 10 rods wide (160 feet) to allow grazing for the cattle, sheep, horses, and other farm animals driven from farms in western Rhode Island and eastern Connecticut to the docks at Wickford. Other named features on the map include Blackstone Canal, Hope Furnace, India Bridge, Perry's Iron Works, Beavertail Lighthouse, Slater's Mills, and dozens of towns, lakes, ponds, rivers, islands, and hills, with topography drawn in relief. The image area measures 28.7 x 22 cm [11½" x 8¾"], and there is a mileage scale below the title. Longitude is measured from Greenwich and Washington. The map was engraved by Young & Delleker for the second edition of Anthony Finley's A New General Atlas comprising a complete Set of Maps representing the general Divisions of the Globe together with the several Empires Kingdoms and States of the World compiled from the latest Authorities and corrected by the most recent Discoveries, Philadelphia, 1827. Condition: This map is in very good condition, bright and clean, printed on a heavy paper, with a few faint spots in the outer margins and no rips or tears. It is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions. It is an original, authentic antique map, not a reproduction or modern reprint, and is fully guaranteed to be genuine.
