This is a rare chance to own it. I inherited it, treasured it, and now it is time to pass it on. It was originally purchased in Aspen in the 1960's -1970's. Measurements: Frame 17 x 21 inches Rabbet (Opening for Painting) 11 1/4 x 15 1/4 inches Here is some background on the artist from the internet: Renowned artist Cecile Ryden Johnson, 1916-2010, was an internationally known American watercolorist, influenced by the “plein air” tradition of artists who left their studios and traveled to paint in natural settings. Johnson gained recognition for capturing the unique beauty and feeling of natural color, light and shade of landscapes. Johnson loved the outdoors, and she loved sports. This love and her consummate skill at capturing action live at sporting events led to a variety of commissions to paint on camera from ABC Wide World of Sports, Canadian Broadcasting, the BBC, CNN and other television networks. ABC and CBC broadcast her painting in action at five Winter Olympic Games, including the men’s and women’s Gold Medal rounds in figure skating as well as the famous 1980 “Miracle on Ice” Olympic hockey game between the U.S. and Russia in Lake Placid. The U.S. Olympic Fine Arts Committee selected Johnson to produce the official lithographs for the Lake Placid Winter Games. Dignitaries purchased her paintings, such as Presidents Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter, Emperor Akihito of Japan and King Carl XVI Gustav of Sweden. Johnson was on the board of the American Watercolor Society and the Board of Trustees of the National Art Museum of Sport. Very Good Condition. Handsomely framed, behind glass. Not examined out of the frame, so I don't know what is on the back of the painting. On close inspection, there is an area where the paper has buckled, but it is well camouflaged by trees and mountain. The last photo focuses in on the area with the raised area, but it is not evident in the picture. Buckling can happen in even top quality watercolor paintings. There is no evidence of fading or water damage. The work is signed with her name followed by AWS which stands for the American Watercolor Society. For some odd reason, my father-in-law decided to glue an author bio from the gallery to the back of the painting (maybe because there was no internet). It remains there.
