Description: ORIGINAL ANSEL ADAMS (1902-1984) 'SPIRES OF ST PETER & PAUL CHURCH, SAN FRANCISCO' SILVER PRINT PHOTOGRAPH This is just a great original piece. I am offering this from my collection this one week and if they dont sell, I am going to put it away for a few years. This is an incredibly scarce and rare example of one of the most important photographers in the history of the medium. This is not my first Ansel Adams photograph but it is really one of my favorites. It might be my favorite because, though Adams is obviously known for his landscape photographs, this is one of the very few he did of architecture. On top of that, it is basically a one of a kind photograph as there are no other records of this photograph out there. To make it even better, Adams gave a very complete description about the importance of this photograph and how it was created in his book, with an image of the photograph. (see description below). Wonderful original silver print with the image measuring 8 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches on original the mount measuring 10x8 inches. Adams' Yosemite National Park stamp (BMFA 3) lower left. Pen and pencil notations on the mount with some additional notations in pencil on mount verso. Photograph was taken sometime in the 1940s as the book was printed in 1948 and this would have been before that. Photograph is in excellent condition with just the only issue at all is a small bloom spot upper left corner of the image. Really only visible at certain angles. Unframed. Adams' commentary on this image in his book The Negative offers a poetic and practical glimpse into his skill as a practitioner and vision as a photographer: "The gilt crosses were blazing with the glare of sunlight. The stone of the church was fairly light, but if rendered 'literally' it would have competed with the crosses. Hence I exposed to keep the stone a middle value, and the foliage is thus quite dark. The sky was a deep blue and adequately separated in value from the stone. I made a second negative at one-half the exposure, but lost qualities in the shadows and in the foliage while gaining nothing with the values of the stone and cross. (The sky was deeper, but the effect was excessively theatrical.) With both negatives, the below-normal exposure had no effect on the glare from the crosses since that was far beyond the normal exposure scale of the film."
