Description: Original antique color lithographed 1886 street map of the city of Rome, printed more than 130 years ago. It locates a proposed railway and depot on the west bank of the Tiber River, along with numerous bridges. A color key in the legend shows houses to be demolished to make new streets. This extensive "urban renewal" project included the complete obliteration of what for hundreds of years had been the Roman Ghetto in the historic district of Sant'Angelo, east of Tiber Island. The map was issued in the 9th edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica, published by Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, in 1886. The image area measures 21 x 30.5 cm [8¼" x 12"], and there is wonderful detail throughout. A number key locates more than three dozen ancient relics and monuments. The handsome cartography is by noted Edinburgh mapmaker W. & A.K. Johnston, and the map is titled Modern Rome showing the Municipal System for the Enlargement of the City. 1885. Condition: The map is in excellent condition, bright and clean, with a vertical center fold, as issued, and no marks, rips, or tears. It is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions. This is an original, authentic antique map, not a reproduction or modern reprint, and it is fully guaranteed to be genuine. It would make a very handsome display in your den or office. It would also make a perfect gift, and we'll include our helpful framing tips for your reference, along with a photocopy of the title page from the book in which it was published.
