Description: Presenting an antique engraving by French engraver Claude Nicholas Cochin, The Elder 1688 - 1754 after the painting “Love at the Italian Theatre” by Jean Antoine Watteau 1684 - 1721. The painting was completed in 1714. It is mounted in a gilt frame behind original wavy glass. The etching appears in very good condition without undulation, tears or holes. It has overall toning to the engraving, borders and matting expected with a 200 plus year old engraving. The verso was covered and sealed with 18th century French publication/ book pages. We strongly believe this is an original 1934 issue. L’Amour Au Theatre Italien was engraved from the painting by Jean Antoine Watteau by Charles Nicholas Cochin, The Elder. The print was offered for sale on April 24, 1734 in the publication issue of the Mercure de France, (page 940). The gilt frame has probably been repainted. It is in good condition. Frame measures approximately 27”x 24”. The sight within the matting is approximately 20 1/2” x 17”. Not examined outside of frame. Weighs just 10 lbs.
