Listed items will not be marked down during the listing duration. The small 2 piece carving set offered here is ideal for roast chicken, other small fowl, steak and small roasts. The handles are hollow and silverplate. The tines and blade are stainless steel. This set comes in the original presentation box. The pieces sit in a pink molded base, and the top is clear plastic.the bottom edges of the base show some wear, as does the plastic top. The design of these pieces is simple but stunning Art Deco. When a pattern has more than one name, it means that it was sold in a variety of ways. Banbury Brookwood has an appealing English feel to it. Old carving set knives, with very few exceptions, have been sharpened many times over their long life. This repeated sharpening can result in leaving marks on the blade. This is not a flaw, but rather proof of the age of the knife. These knives may or may not have been sharpened within the recent past, but it is more likely that they will need to be sharpened by the new owner before use. The presence of the marks left by sharpening, or the fact that the knife is not sharpened before it is received is NOT grounds for a return. A carving set is used to cut up meat into portion sized pieces. Carving used to be done at the table, with the carver standing at the head of the table and asking how each person wanted their portion. It is an art; carving is something that requires a great deal of practice. Even then, one frequently has difficulties. When done well and with a flourish, carving sets a standard for the meal. It shows the time and effort the host has put into the meal. The carving set has two or three pieces: a knife with an edge that will cut the toughest roast, and usually the old carbon steel blades are sharpest; a fork for holding the meat steady while it is being cut and parceling it out; and sometimes a hone for sharpening the blade. The hone is an optional piece because the sharpening action also spreads little particles of metal all over the room. Carving sets also look really attractive on a buffet. Sometimes the fork, particularly the larger ones, will have heat absorbers that prevent it from getting too hot. This kind of fork can be left on a platter and still be touchable. The carving knife and fork offered here measure respectively about 10 and about 8 3/4". These are not pieces of new silver. They show the patina of as much as 75 years of careful use. There are the light scratches which constitute normal patina. There is no monogram. Silver is softly lustrous. There is no silver loss. The pattern is crisp and clear. I polish all silver before listing on eBay. Please email with any questions before bidding. PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE AUCTION DESCRIPTION CAREFULLY.
