Description: Here is a genuine vintage old and aged mask. It originates from the Sepik region of Papua New Guinea. I am guessing 1930's / 1940's - possibly older. I do not know for sure which Sepik village or peoples it belongs to. This mask was used in ritual and is not one made simply for the tourist industry. The main body is from a species of river turtle - no doubt hunted for the neccisity of a meal. The carapace or shell has then been used to work into a mask with I suspect locally sourced muds/clay and pigments along with rafia style interwoven strips of wood. The mask is overall sturdy although it does show elements of aging and a couple of surface cracks in the outer. Please examine the photos. No parts are likely to crumble off to reassure you. The pigment colours are of yellows, reds, oranges and ochre. Fascinating detail with cowrie shells incorporated into the facial features and overall design. A striking mask of authenticity that exudes wonder and mystery. Please examine the photos for detail. The photos 8 & 9 show the reverse and clearly illustrate the river turtle shell that forms the mask's character. Happy bidding.
