MONTEVIDEO CUP 1953 Review Tables/ Matches Champion squad MONTEVIDEO CUP 1953 On February 8, 1953, Nacional won the first edition of the Montevideo Cup, one of the most important international friendly tournaments in history of our football. The Montevideo Cup had seven editions between 1953 and 1979 and Nacional finished as the winningest team in the history of the tournament with four titles. Following a project by the Aurinegro leader Jos Nozar, in 1952 a committee was formed made up of leaders from Nacional, Pearol and the AUF, to organize the trips, stays and prizes of the participating foreign teams. The 1953 Montevideo Cup was played in an octagonal format by points, between January 17 and February 13, 1953. Nacional achieved the title early as an undefeated player, after defeating Colo Colo of Chile, Presidente Hayes of Paraguay, Dinamo Zagreb from Yugoslavia, First Vienna from Austria, Botafogo from Brazil and Pearol and to tie with Fluminense.
