Description: Original oil painting on board by French Impressionist artist Lucien-Henri Grandgerard (1880-1970). The work is a lovely depiction of a woman at her toilette. Painting is signed in the lower left with the artist's initials and stamped on the reverse with the artist's name (twice) and address, as well as handwritten title "Toilette". Painting measures 13 1/2 x 11 1/2 inches, including frame approx. 23 1/4 x 21 1/4 inches. It is in a superb carved frame and linen liner made by D. Matt Inc. of New York City. Matt was a very high end framing workshop on a par with Heydenryk and Milch. I actually worked for them for a year in the late 1970s making linen frame liners. The reverse also bears a partial label from a New York art gallery. Lucien-Henri Grandgerard (1880-1970) was a French painter and printmaker. He was born in Nancy and studied at the School of Fine Arts in Nancy, then in Paris where he entered Bonnat’s workshop; he was also a pupil of Jules Lefèbvre and Luc Olivier Merson at the Academie Julian. From 1906, he exhibited every year at the Salon des Artistes Français where he was made a member of the Committee and of the Jury. After the First World War, he travelled extensively in northern Europe, Provence and Italy. He painted landscapes, portraits and many works devoted to women: bathing nymphs, nudes against a background of landscape and ballet dancers. He was also an important graphic artist who produced many etchings and drypoints. For painting, the Grand Prix du Portrait was awarded to him in 1933 and a Gold Medal was received the following year. For engravings he received a Silver Medal at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1929 and a Gold Medal in 1932. source: Ladislas Harcos; Peintres et Graveurs Lorrains, 1833-1980; Éditions Harcos, 1991
