Description: OFFICIAL HISTORY AUSTRALIAN ARMY MEDICAL SERVICES 1914-1918 Vol 2 Western Front. THE OFFICIAL HISTORY OF THE AUSTRALIAN ARMY MEDICAL SERVICES 1914-1918 Volume 2 The Western Front. by Col. A G Butler DSO Even before the war ended, Charles Bean had taken on the massive task of writing Australia's Official History of World War One. Bean entrusted the compiling of the Medical History of the AIF to Arthur G. Butler DSO ED (25 May 1872 – 27 February 1949) who as a Doctor and had been a member of the AIF Medical Services throughout the war. Interestingly, Butler from Queensland had landed at Gallipoli with the 9th Battalion in the first boat ashore and then performed heroic feats on that first Anzac Day. The experiences of the Australian Medical Service in the Gallipoli and Eastern theatres of war were recorded in Volume I. Its activities with the infantry on the Western Front during 1916, 1917 and 1918 are covered in this work, Volume 2. Volume 2 is divided into three sections, of which the first and third are concerned with narrative respectively before and after the Battle of Cambrai in November 1917. Of course, mostly only the Australian Battles are covered with the narrative devoting much detail to the horrors of Fromelles, Pozieres, Bullecourt, Flanders (Messines, Ypres, Passchendale Polygon Woods, Menin etc) The second section covers the technical history, the narrative of the medical events the description of the medical machinery of the warfare. The chapters of this section contain a complete and detailed study of the fundamental duties of the Medical Service, namely, the evacuation and treatment of wounded and the prevention of disease. Special attention is devoted to the problems of “wastage” and the maintenance of a high standard of physical fitness in the AIF. Third section covers mainly the Offensive Battles of 1918, including but not limited to Ameins, various attacks on the Hindenburg Line, Villers-Bretonneux etc. Released in 1940, during World War 2, there was never a great quantity of the book published.
