Butler was born in 1947 in Pasadena, California and she died in 2006 in Lake Forest Park, Washington. Her father died when she was seven years old and she was raised by her mother and maternal grandmother. She grew up in the racially integrated community which allowed her to experience cultural and ethnic diversity in the midst of racial segregation. She was shy and awkward, which made schoolwork difficult and made her the target of bullies. As a result, she frequently passed the time reading at the Pasadena Central Library. She quickly became interested in science fiction magazine such as Amazing Stories, Galaxy Science Fiction, and The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction. She read stories by John Brunner, Zenna Henderson, Theodore Sturgeon, and others. She wrote reams of pages in what she called her “big pink notebook.” At the age of ten she begged her mother to buy her a Remington typewriter. At age twelve she watched a televised version of the film Devil Girl From Mars (1954) and concluded that she could write a better story. She drafted what would later become the basis for her ‘Patternist novels.’ She graduated from John Muir High School in 1965. Then she attended Pasadena City College at night and worked during the day. As a freshman she won a college-wide short-story contest, earning her first income as a writer. She also got the “germ of the idea” for what would become her novel KINDRED. In 1968 she graduated from PCC with an Associate of Arts degree with a focus in history. Butler then worked at a series of temporary jobs so that she could concentrate on her writing. She also enrolled in writing courses through UCLA Extension. For the next five she worked on the series of novels that later became what is known as the “Patternist” series which consists of PATTERNMASTER, MIND OF MY MIND, and SURVIVOR. In 1978 she was able to make enough money from her writing to be able to stop working the temp jobs. She also wrote WILD SEED and CLAY’S ARK (offered here). She won Hugo Awards for her short story “Speech Sounds” and for her novelette “Blood Child.” In 1995 she became the first science fiction writer to be awarded a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, an award that came with a prize of $295,000. During Butler’s later years, she struggled with writer’s block and depression, partly caused by the side effects of medication for high blood pressure. Unfortunately she dies outside her home in Lake Forest, Washington in 2006 at the age of only 58. Octavia Butler is the author of such great and famous books as the “Patternist” series consisting of PATTERNMASTER, MIND OF MY MIND, SURVIVOR, WILD SEED, and CLAY’S ARK (offered here); the “Xenogenesis” series consisting of DAWN, ADULTHOOD RITES, and IMAGO; the “Parable” series consisting of PARABLE OF THE SOWER and PARABLE OF THE TALENTS; KINDRED, FLEDGLING, and several others. Bram Stoker Award winner for Best Graphic Novel. Clearly Octavia E. Butler was (and remains) one of the best, most famous, most important, and most collectible science fiction author’s of all time. From the front flap of the dust jacket: “ . . . CLAY’S ARK . . . Over the past few years, Octavia E. Butler has come to be recognized as one of the most gifted science fiction writers of the decade. She has been called ‘One of the genre’s important new talents’ by Publisher’s Weekly, and her novels have been praised by the Washington Post as ‘Spare and sure . . . even in moments of great tension she never loses control over her pacing or her sense of story.’ The San Francisco Chronicle says ‘Butler’s strength is her ability to create complete and believable characters.’ . . . In CLAY’S ARK Ms. Butler has created a horrifyingly believable world in the not-too-distant future, a time when the bonds of civilization have all but disappeared, when violence and vigilante justice are the rule rather than the exception. In such a world, the kidnapping of a doctor and his two daughters traveling across the California desert is hardly exceptional. But the small band of emaciated strangers who capture them is. They do not speak of ransom. Although sometimes their glint with almost animal cunning, their bodies are wracked and wasted — the consequence of drugs or disease. Paradoxically, they possess almost superhuman strength. Let by Asa Elias Doyle, the sole survivor of the ill-fated Clay’s Ark, the desperate people have become innocent victims of a ‘close encounter’ with an alien life-form — one so sinister and ultimately destructive of humankind that it has forced them into exile in a remote corner of a desolate wasteland, the better to resist a compulsion to spread the infection. To resist is to ensure mental agony, but to surrender is to relinquish one’s humanity and free will — to be ruled by physical drives that know no morality or restraint . . . Chilling, exciting, and suspenseful, CLAY’S ARK is a thought-provoking story of what it really means to be ‘human.’ Octavia E. Butler’s tale is unique and hauntingly original . . . “ From the rear panel of the dust jacket: “ . . . Butler’s plotting is as irresistible as the alien invader itself. This is a genuine SF thriller, as hard to stop reading as THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN . . . “ — Publisher’s Weekly Kirkus review has said of Ms. Butler’s work: “It’s impossible to stop reading at any point.” From the rear panel of the dust jacket: “ . . . ‘You made a promise!’ he said to Eli. ‘You said you’d keep her safe!’ ‘Yes,’ Eli’ss coloring looked worse than ever in the cool dimness of the room. His voice was almost too soft to be heard. ‘I said that.’ He unclasped his hands, and Blake noticed that even they were dripping wet. Diaphoresis, Blake thought. Excessive sweating — symptomatic of what? Emaciation, trembling, bad coloring, now sweating — plus surprising strength, speed, and coordination. God knew what else. Symptomatic of what? . . . “ From the rear panel of the dust jacket: OCTAVIA E. BUTLER is the widely acclaimed author of five science fiction novels. She lives in Los Angeles. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ I grade books and dust jackets: fine, near fine, very good, good, fair, and poor. I describe all faults. If you sell books on EBAY (or anywhere else), it is de rigueur not to list 1st printings of book club books as 1st editions (unless they ARE the 1st edition, which occurs only occasionally); also, a 1st edition, 7th printing, is not a 1st edition. Ex-library books must be noted as such since generally they are of little value to the collector of 1st editions. Condition is also very important to those collectors. Books and dust jackets must be described in detail. In other words, it is incumbent upon the SELLER to know what is and is not a 1st edition. Mistakes can be made (and corrected), of course, but if you DON'T KNOW, don't try to sell a book as a 1st edition. _____________________________________________________________________________________________ CONDITION: A FINE book in a FINE dust jacket. The book is tight and square in its black boards binding with bright gilt lettering on the spine of the book. There is no writing in the book; no bookplates; no remainder marks. The dust jacket is NOT price-clipped and shows the correct 1st issue price of $12.95. There are no chips or tears or wrinkles to the dust jacket. The great and iconic and fantastic dust jacket artwork by the excellent artist John Cayea. This is the nicest copy of CLAY’S ARK that I’ve seen in the last several years and it appears to be the nicest copy that is currently being offered for sale on EBAY. A MUST FOR THE COLLECTOR OF IMPORTANT MODERN SCIENCE FICTION 1st EDITIONS AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF AWARD-NOMINATED 1st EDITIONS AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF OCTAVIA E. BUTLER 1st EDITIONS! ________________________________________________________________________________________________ Additional photos are available upon request. I am continuing to list some of my best books (especially science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions) on EBAY not so much as auctions (due to the fact that EBAY charges quite a bit to list items for reserve auctions), but more along the lines of listing my “catalogue” of books that I have for sale. I'm not going to “give” these books away, but my opening bids and Buy-It-Now prices are usually a fair amount below market value. Furthermore, however, for certain scarce books in great condition, I do expect to get close to what they're worth. Stay with me; I always have a number of important, collectible, cornerstone science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions listed. Many thanks! All items are being offered for sale elsewhere; I reserve the right to end this listing early if this item sells elsewhere. __________________________________________________________________________________ Note: I own the following two books: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY JUSTICE. Subterranean Press, 2014. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY MERCY. Subterranean Press, 2016. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I am looking for: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY SWORD. Subterranean Press, 2015. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I would like to round out this set by acquiring the #2/500 copy of ANCILLARY SWORD. If anyone has this copy and is willing to sell it on EBAY, I would be highly interested in obtaining it so that all my copies would have matching numbers. Many thanks. __________________________________________________________________________________ Contact me if you’re looking for a particular title or titles.
