Northern Sweet Pecan Tree Seeds/Nuts (Carya illinoinensis) Hardy-Zone 5 Edible

Description: Northern Sweet Pecan Tree Seeds/Nuts (Carya illinoinensis)"Choose from 5, 10, or 20 Seeds"Pecans are One of the Most Valuable Cultivated Plants Originating in North America. Improved Varieties with Thin-Shelled Nuts are Grown in Plantations or Orchards in the Southeast, as Far North as Illinois. Growing your Own Pecans is an Attractive Idea if you Have Plenty of Space—Not Just for One Tree but for Two or Even Three because Pecan Trees Require Cross-Pollination from Other Pecan Trees to Produce a Good Crop. The Wood is Used for Furniture, Flooring, Veneer, and Charcoal for Smoking Meats. Thomas Jefferson Planted Seeds at Monticello and Gave Some to George Washington; Now these Pecans are the Oldest trees in Mount Vernon. The Largest of the Hickories, Pecan Tree Typically Grow 70-100 Foot Tall, and can Reach 160 Foot Tall.Consistent water and fertilization are the two most important aspects of pecan tree care to make sure your pecan tree not only grows at the expected rate—one to three feet per year for non-bearing and five to 12 inches for established bearing trees—but also produces nuts. Pecan trees need full sun with at least 6 to 8 hours of sunlight per day. While pecan trees can grow in a wide range of soils, they produce best in sandy loam with clay subsoil. The soil should be fertile and well-drained yet still be able to hold water, otherwise the tree will need more frequent irrigation. Just as important as the right soil texture is that the roots have ample room to grow. The roots of pecan trees, which mostly grow in the topmost 6 to 18 inches of soil, spread twice as far as the branches growing deep. Zones 5-9Pecan Germination:1) Soak seeds in water and let them soak for 4 days. Be sure to change water daily.2) Cold stratify by placing in a bag of wet peat moss or vermiculite. Cut a few small holes in the bag for air circulation and place inside the fridge for 90 days. Periodically check to ensure they stay slightly moist, but never overly wet.3) Plant them in well draining potting soil between 1-2" inches deep.4) Keep the soil very warm at 85 degrees with a heated propagator. Turning it off at night to create alternating temperatures will mimic their natural conditions and help with germination.5) Expect staggered or erratic germination with seeds sprouting anywhere between 4-8 weeks.
