The longest running pattern ever made by Noritake, "175" has a unique production story lasting nearly 90 years. The pattern became an instant success when Noritake released the first pieces in 1906. Its beautiful design features an elegant scrolling pattern with flowers in a ball or bulb form, which is why 175 is often referred to as the “Christmas Ball” collection. Although the pattern was affordably priced, early pieces were hand painted with 24K gold enameling which gave the design a rich look and feel. While the front of the plate first catches your eye, the back of the plate is just as interesting. Early productions were marked “Hand Painted Noritake Japan,” in green, indicating the patterns were made between 1906 – 1940. World War II forced Noritake to close the company’s factory. Once production resumed, Noritake used a gold backstamp that sometimes included the wording “Occupied Japan” from 1947 to 1953. Pieces produced after that time are simply marked with the Noritake backstamp.
