The aircraft was built at the Scientific Research Aeroinstitute (NIAI) at the Leningrad Training Center of the Civil Air Fleet. The main material used in the construction - plywood, served as the second name for the aircraft.Designed and supervised the construction of NIAI-1 engineers A.I. Lisichkin and V.F. Rentel. In the monoplane scheme, they introduced an innovation - a large thickening of the wing in the center section, with the placement of a cockpit in it. The design of the aircraft turned out to be very light and rational. The empty weight of the aircraft was 746 kg, the takeoff weight was 1160 kg.The aircraft showed good flight and operational qualities during testing. With the M-11 engine, the speed reached 154km0h, the ceiling was 3770m. The car was put into serial production. 20 aircraft were built, including a float version. The aircraft have been in operation on local Aeroflot lines and in the Arctic for several years.The pilots highly appreciated the performance of the aircraft. If necessary, she could fly without landing for almost 7 hours.
