Description: NGERE-WOBE "WE" MASK For your consideration is this old, often-used wooden mask carved with exaggerated facial features intended to frighten the viewer; a bulging forehead, protuberant tubular eyes, broad triangular nose embellished with fifteen nails, broad lips and an open mouth with a pointed protruding tongue. There are areas of red and blue paint, 31 attachment perforations and numerous nails and nail-holes. This fine mask possesses stylistic elements used by both the N’gere and Wobe carvers, grouped together by ethnologists and called “We”. Both groups undertook frequent masquerades and the distinctive masks used in these ceremonies were owned by ranking families. In a marketplace teeming with fake “African” masks and statues manufactured from as far away as China (!), often artificially aged and offered for quick sale to inexperienced buyers or price-conscious shoppers at impossibly low cost, it is becoming increasingly difficult to acquire genuine old and ethnographically significant artworks ritually used by indigenous group members. If not to U.S. buyer’s satisfaction, this artwork may be returned as shipped within thirty days of purchase for a purchase price refund minus 10% re-stocking fee for return of item in original condition and shipping materials. Please review seller’s 25 year 100% positive “feedback” record and bid with confidence. Bidders with five or less "feedback" (or private) comments are welcome to bid, but must first contact seller to verify ID; if there are questions, please inquire before bidding.
