Description: NGC XF Denarius of Gordian III AD238-244 Gordian III, born Marcus Antonius Gordianus on January 20, 225, reigned as the Roman emperor from 238 to 244. Remarkably, at the tender age of 13, he ascended to become the youngest sole ruler of the unified Roman Empire. His parents were Antonia Gordiana and Junius Balbus, the latter passing away prior to 238. Antonia Gordiana, his mother, was the offspring of Emperor Gordian I and the younger sibling of Emperor Gordian II. Details about Gordian III's early life remain scant until his elevation to the throne, at which point he adopted the name of his maternal grandfather in 238. Gordian III was said to be killed in battle against Philip the Arab in 244, multiple sources say that he was in fact lynched by his own troops.
