Description: NEWFOUNDLAND 105b 1916 2c ROSE RED KING GEORGE V ROYAL FAMILY ISSUE MPH Please read the TERMS OF SALE below prior to bidding. BID WITH CONFIDENCE - SATISFACTION GUARANTEED NEWFOUNDLAND 105b 1916 2c ROSE RED KING GEORGE V ROYAL FAMILY ISSUE MPH Two cent, King George V (shown wearing the Royal Coronation ermine robe) stamp from the Coronation/Royal Family issue of 1911-1916, rose red blurred image from the war time printing of 1916, comb perf 13.8x14.0. There are at least 7 recorded perf varieties in the Coronation/Royal Family issue - 6 for the 2 cent carmine shade but only 2 for the rose red war time printing issue. Recess printed from engraved plates on medium weight, very crisp, white wove paper with vertical mesh, white (almost colorless) gum. The designs of this issue were produced in relatively small formats resulting in stamps being printed very close together. Most stamps have very narrow margins or none at all with perforations cutting into one or more sides. Stamps with reasonably decent centering and perforations clear of the design on all sides may be considered as very fine for this issue. Approximately 30% of original gum disturbed by previous hinging, hinge remnant. Sound, fault-free example of this Newfoundland stamp. Stamp shown is a good representative of those that are available. If the stamp received fails to meet expectations, it may be returned for a replacement or full refund. The June 19, 1911 coronation of King George V provided members of the British Commonwealth opportunities to commemorate the event through the production of new stamp issues. Newfoundland lead the way with an unprecidented set of stamps depicting all the members of the Royal household - some for the first (and only) time ever. The 11 stamp set included 10 Royal portrait images plus a 15 cent high value stamp featuring the Newfoundland Colonial seal, officially granted by King George IV in 1827. This "Great Seal of the Colony" depicts Mercury, the god of commerce, presenting to Britannia, a fisherman bearing gifts from the bounty of the sea (Newfoundland's life blood). The central image repeated that designed by Raymond Ostrander Smith (1873-1933) for the 30 cent value of the 1897 "Cabot" issue. Under contact with Whitehead, Morris and Company Limited (Whitehead, Morris and Company did not have the equipment necessary to print stamps from engraved plates): Perkins, Bacon and Company apparently recess printed the 1c 2c, 3c, 4c, 5c, and 10c value stamps from dies and engraving plates produced by De La Rue and Company of London. Printing of the 6c, 8c, 9c, 12, and 15c higher value stamps is believed to have been sub-contracted to A. Alexander and Sons Limited of London who used engraved plates provided by MacDonald and Sons. Images should provide all the information necessary to make a reasonably intelligent bid on this lot. I am confident that a mutually satisfactory solution can be worked out to any problem that might develop.
