Description: New York Slapshots Vs Carolina Thunderbirds Jan. 7, 1986 RARE Hockey Ticket Stub The New York Slapshots were a minor professional hockey team that played in the Atlantic Coast Hockey League during the 1985-86 season. Although the team was officially based in Staten Island, New York, the rink at which they were slated to play (known as the Phil Esposito Sports Complex) was never completed. Conventional wisdom is that the team played as a road-only team for the entire season, however the team did seem to play at least one game at the Ironbound Recreational Center in Newark, NJ (This ticket stub is from this game. I was at this game). The Slapshots were owned by Rudy Slucker, president of Atlas Hardware Company based in Long Island. The team's greatest claim to fame (besides their movie-esque name) is that they were coached by former Philadelphia Flyer tough-guy, Dave Schultz. 1985-86 Record 1 Seasons (GP-W-L-T-OTL-SOL) 59-21-38-0-0.356 Since their home arena on Staten Island never materialized, the New York Slapshots moved to Troy, New York for the 1986-87 season. The Troy Slapshots played at the Houston Field House on the campus of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Although RPI was known for its own successful Division I NCAA hockey program, that did not translate into a demand for low minor league hockey. The Slapshots drew crowds of just a few hundred people and after 6 games played, on November 17, 1986, they dropped out of the league. 1986-87 Record 1 Seasons (GP-W-L-T-OTL-SOL) 6-2-4-0-0.333 Ticket stub measures 4" x 1.5" and is is excellent condition. It has a tape stain on top.
