Illustrated from Old Prints and Photographs. Frontispiece, List of Illustrations, Appendix, Notes at rear (46 pages), Index; xiii, 257 pages. The original green cloth is in very good shape despite some discoloration near the top of upper board and slight fading to the spine where the gilt lettering is faintly discernible; gilt remains bright on the upper board. The interior is particularly bright, crisp and clean---except for the endpapers where there is a line of toning near the hinges. A few pale spots on the fore-edge show in two of the images. "Many things happened in 1855 and 1856, having a bearing upon Whitman's growth and his reputation, which no student has hitherto discovered. Each new revelation not only fills a gap in the record, but clarifies and supports the rest. It is not, therefore, our desire to exaggerate journalistic writings which Whitman himself neither preserved nor alluded to, as though they could add a cubit to his stature as an author; but rather it is our hope thus to aid the reader of Whitman to such an approach as will enable him to appreciate most truly the authentic works of the poet's genius."
