About the Book:Brigham Young has long been a person of intrigue and a subject of biographies, exposés, and scholarship. For all that has been written on and about him by others, nothing gives better insight into the life and character of the man than his own writings, of which his personal journals are arguably the most important. The Brigham Young Journals present the accurate transcripts of Young's personal, or holograph, journals and those kept by secretaries as he assumed the mantle of leading The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The journals provide readers with firsthand access to Young’s life and experiences alongside textual and contextual annotation to aid in understanding those events. This first volume of The Brigham Young Journals presents all of Young’s personally handwritten journal keeping. Soon after his baptism, the uneducated carpenter “preacht as opertunity prezented,’ keeping a record of his missionary travels, Over the next thirteen years, he jotted down entries (often with creative, phonetic spelling), documenting his travels, ministry, and life. In this volume, readers will see Young's life experiences unfold chronologically following his life-changing baptism in April 1832 until he was prepared to lead Church members west from Nauvoo in February 1846. These pre-Utah journals are unique. Three of the four were written entirely in Brigham Young’s own hand. Those handwritten entries give readers an unparalleled glimpse into his life and thought, even though many entries are very brief and succinct. The fourth and final journal was written by secretaries in his Nauvoo office after Young took responsibility for leading the Church in the wake of the murders of Joseph and Hyrum Smith. Part I guides readers through the four journals with editorial notes and historical annotation that elucidate Young’s life and the early history of the Church. Part II looks at the journals as physical artifacts, noting their dimensions and outstanding characteristics. Reference material at the end provides a chronology of Young’s life through 1846 and a list of places he visited, including travel itineraries that document his extraordinary, seemingly tireless efforts to preach far and wide.
