Cleveland came to power at a time when confidence in the federal government was at a low. The post-Civil War decades had seen blatant abuse of power by arrogant politicians and, by 1884, the people had had enough. Grover Cleveland was what the nation needed, a man of integrity who would lead them out of the mire. The son of a Protestant minister, Cleveland personified the basic American values of honesty, courage and common sense. These had been hallmarks of his political career since he began as a party worker in Buffalo, New York. "Public office is public trust," he once noted. As Buffalo's mayor and, later, as Governor of New York, he routed out corruption and reduced the influence of the special interest groups, including members of his own party. The whole country took notice. As the Presidential election of 1884 approached, it was politics as usual among Republican leaders. Their nominee was James Blaine, who had previously been implicated in a financial scandal involvin. railroad payoffs. Some Republican party members were so outrage that they openly voiced support for Cleveland, the Democratic nominee. In the end, their defection may have tipped the balance Cleveland's election victory was by the narrowest of margins, just 23,005 votes, to become the first Democratic President since the Civi War. Faced with a Republican Senate, Cleveland used his powers of veto, appointment and administrative control to steer a slow, steady course of practical reform. In the process, the President made powerful enemies among politicians, reformers, Civil War veterans and indus-trialists. Their opposition, coupled with a lackluster campaign, led to Cleveland's loss to Benjamin Harrison in the presidential election of 1888. The seeds of financial disaster sown in the previous four years took root almost immediately after the election. Bank failures, bankruptcies and widespread unemployment seized the economy. In its panic to find a quick, easy solution - and a scapegoat - Congress balked at cooperating with the President. Cleveland eventually won that battle, but the struggle destroyed his chances for further reforms. The tide of public opinion turned against the President who, neverthe-less, held to his convictions for the remainder of his term. It is a measure of the man's character that the last words he uttered on his deathbed were, "I have tried so hard to do right." His courage, even in the face of adversity, eventually earned Cleveland a place of honor among America's Presidents. It would appear that each time the public's confidence in its leaders is shaken, Grover Cleveland's stature increases. This copy includes the original collector's notes for each volume, and the unused original custom bookplates. CONDITION: Light shelf-wear to the green leather covers, fading to the top edges. Volume 2 front cover has white mark on the green leather (see photos). Some faint wear and mild foxing to the top and outside edge gilt, the interior of each volume appears clean and unmarked.
