Description: From the private collection of KSCartist-Tim Gagnon aka "The Patch Guy PROJECT MERCURY COMMEMORATIVE 2018 The emblems that were painted on the Mercury spacecraft commemorate the six flown missions. Each emblem was chosen by the astronaut of that mission to illustrate their feelings about the program."Freedom 7" and "Liberty Bell 7" are below the horizon, indicating that these two missions were sub-orbital. The other four missions are placed above the horizon in Earth orbit. The Sun, just beginning to rise, highlights the fact that these were the first human spaceflight missions flown by American astronauts. The Friendship 7, Aurora 7 and Sigma 7 are replicas of the emblems painted by Cece Bibby, someone I consider to be the First Lady of Mission Patch Artists. Cece painted the emblems after the spacecraft was stacked on top of the launch vehicle and rolled out to the pad.The Greek symbol for planet Mercury with the number "7" inside was adopted as the symbol for the Mercury astronaut group. The names of the Mercury 7 astronauts surround the patch. Slayton’s name is in blue and in proximity to the Mercury astronaut symbol to honor his appointment as senior manager of the astronaut office in charge of crew assignments.Refinements were made to the Earth, mission emblems, spacecraft, Mercury astronaut symbol and other details when compared with the 2008 original.
