Description: 1899 National Copper Plate premium of Napoleon Lajoie. Similar to the Sporting News M101-1, but does not show the same Sporting News header and is blank backed. Was at one point attached to album and has residue on back and half is covered with additional paper that has not been removed to prevent damage. Small tear on left side (see photos). Has been trimmed from original size, but I do believe this is National Copper Plate issued and not a Sporting News M101-1 due to header missing (although trimmed should still show with size) and blank back. The only examples similar are M101-1 and I cannot find any comps for a National Copper Plate. Also note the extra background art height on the photo that is not seen in Sporting News M101-1. Considered a rookie edition (although he appears on covers of Leslie’s Weekly and Sporting Life earlier, this is considered Lajoie’s rookie “card” along with similar M101-1 issue. But without being able to find an exact National Copper Plate I assume the Sporting News M101-1 is more common, making this issue much more rare!
