Captain Mulligan was born in the low country of South Carolina, and before the war was in the mercantile and grocery business in Graniteville and Charleston, South Carolina. In 1861 he closed his business and entered the Confederate service as a captain, after raising a company of cavalry and equipping the men at his own expense. Until July of 1863 Mulligan and his company served on the South Carolina coast. At that time he and his company were ordered to eastern North Carolina where they remained until April of 1864, when he took his company to Virginia. He was active in service around Richmond and Petersburg until October 27th 1864 when he was seriously wounded in battle near Burgess’Mills. This volume contains a roster of Co. B 5th South Carolina Cavalry & is one of the few primary sources of information from that regiment!
