Muslim Rulers and Rebels Everyday Politics and Armed Separatism in the Southern Philippines Thomas M. McKenna UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA PRESS Berkeley Los Angeles London ANTHROPOLOGY/POLITICS/SOUTHEAST ASIA Why are ordinary men and women willing to fight and die in armed separatist struggles? How is nationalist solidarity constructed in the face of social disparity between rank-and-file adherents and their leaders? What are the historical origins of the nationalist identities that provide official inspiration for separatist movements in the contemporary world? This book addresses these questions by investigating the meanings and motivations of the contemporary Muslim separatist movement in the Philippines. Based on field research in a poor Muslim community, it is the first ground-level account of the Muslim separatist rebellion and one of the only studies of an armed separatist movement from the viewpoint of its ordinary adherents. Since 1968, when the Muslim separatist movement was first formed, the region of Cotabato has been the principal battleground in the struggle for self-determination for Philippine Muslims. Thomas McKenna examines Muslim separatism in Cotabato against a background of more than four hundred years of political relations among indigenous rulers, their subjects, and external powers seeking the subjugation of Philippine Muslims. Arguing that Muslim subordinates in Cotabato have never been dependent on the cultural productions of their rulers to make sense of their own political circumstances, McKenna challenges prevailing anthropological analyses of nationalism as well as their underlying assumptions about the interplay of culture and power. A skillful meld of historical detail and ethnographic research, Muslim Rulers and Rebels makes a compelling contribution to the study of protest, rebellion, and revolution worldwide. Thomas M. McKenna is Associate Professor of Anthropology, University of Alabama at Birmingham. "Superb as both ethnography and social history, Muslim Rulers and Rebels offers significant new insights into the changing direction of Muslim politics in the Philippines and understanding comparable movements elsewhere. It will be a basic reference for those interested in the dynamics of ethnoreligious political movements in general." Dale F. Eickelman, Professor of Anthropology. Dartmouth College. author of Knowledge and Power in Morocco "A very impressive piece of work. Thomas McKenna has provided the first convincing explanation of a major insurgency that continued on its bloody course for nearly a quarter century. By placing this Philippine Muslim revolt in the frame of ethnonationalism, he opens the book. quite persuasively, to a global problem that is already troubling our transition beyond the Cold War into a post authoritarian age,"Alfred W.
