OVERALL CONDITION = Fair Plus to Good Minus, at best For those who may only be acquainted with either the movie or play version of MR. ROBERTS, the novel itself may come as quite a surprise, since the title character actually has very little to do with most of the book. The novel is a loose selection of fragments of typical daily (and nightly) life on board a U. S. Navy cargo ship in the South Pacific, during the later years of World War II; and describes in humorous and loving detail how the officers and crew of the U. S. S. RELUCTANT attempt to fight off the ever-constant enemy of. . .boredom -- as well as their by-the-book commanding officer, Captain Morton, who seems to be even a greater enemy than the Japanese (with whom the ship never encounters). Mister (Lieutenant) Roberts, of course, is the most likable of all the officers, while Ensign Pulver seems to be consumed with the most plots against the captain. But there are many other officers and enlisted men who make up the crew of the U. S. S. RELUCTANT -- and MISTER ROBERTS relates all their joy and agony in an often humorous (but sometimes painful) manner. Watch the movie -- but read the book, too!
