Native to the Iberian Peninsula and southwest Asia, where it has been growing so long, the exact location is unknown. Some common names are Blackberry, Black Mulberry, and Persian Mulberry. The hairy surface identifies this black mulberry on the lower leaves. It is a deciduous tree that grows to around 30 feet tall and even wider around 40 feet. A well-shaped tree can provide lots of shade and plenty of berries for all animals, including humans. I grew it in Georgia, and it was fully grown in a few years, so it is a very fast-growing tree. The fruits are more delicious than blackberries, in my opinion. The seeds are smaller, and the sweetness isn't overwhelming. Once they turn black, they are ready to pick. It prefers to grow in full sun, but some shade won't hurt. Zones 5-11 Germination Mix seeds and moistened soil together in a ziplock bag. Write the name on the bag. Place in the refrigerator for 60 days. Sow seeds into a well-drained, sandy compost and cover seeds to their own depth with sand or grit. Place the seed tray in bright light and keep moist. Seeds may germinate slowly.
