Description: Morris, George P. The Deserted Bride; And Other Poems. 8vo boards, re-backed with new label. New York: D. Appleton, 1843. First edition; BAL 14363, printing Aa. Bound with The Whip-Poor-Will, illustrated by R. W. Weir. Very good to fine internally. Ex Libris James Henry Darlington by Louis Rhead showing two women (Theology and Science) holding hands under the symbol of the Holy Trinity. This title was extremely popular and went through several different editions. This, with the addition of the Whip-Poor-Will is particularly rare. Darlington was a published poet, book collector, and a noted collector of historical musical instruments, and his collection forms the basis of what is today the Historical Musical Instrument Collection of the Vassar College Department of Music. He was the first Episcopal bishop of Harrisburg, now jurisdictionally the Episcopal Diocese of Central Pennsylvania. Darlington was prominent in the Episcopal Church and was head of its Episcopal Commission on Closer Union with the Eastern Orthodox Church. He was a correspondent of President Woodrow Wilson and served on several war-related committees during World War I in the course of which he received many decorations, including the Legion of Honor from France; Grand Commander of the Order of the Redeemer from Greece; Order of St. Sava from Serbia; Commander of the Order of Queen Isabella la Catolica from Spain; Commander of the Order of the Crown from Italy; and Commander of the Order of Leopold II from Belgium.
