He was 54. Born Jan. 6, 1928, in Dyersberg, Tenn., Mr. Baker left a position as art teacher at Pacific Grove High School in 1952 to pursue a painting and seriography career. He became a member of the Carmel Art Association, where he served on the board of directors, was listed in “Who’s Who in American Art,” and was nominated for a gold medal by the Academia Italia in 1979. Following a period during which he maintained his own gallery in Carmel Valley, his paintings were hung in Carmel’s Zantman Galleries. He was also known as a serigrapher of silk screen paintings and a boating enthusiast. For four years he taught art at night at Monterey Peninsula College.
