Recent excavations are redefining the firing date of Momoyama tea ceramics. Since excavations at Osaka Castle have revealed that Shino ware was not excavated from layers before 1597, this book refers to Momoyama tea ceramics produced from around the death of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the ruler of the Momoyama period, to the early Edo period when Tokugawa Ieyasu took control of the country. Therefore, although most Momoyama tea ceramics were produced in the early Edo period, the glamorous style favored by Hideyoshi and other influential figures of the same period defines these ceramics from this period as Momoyama tea ceramics.
