Description: I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut songs below.) ....... This is a rare June 25th, 1917 program (playbill) from the Pre-Broadway engagement of the JEROME KERN and EDGAR ALLAN WOOLF musical "HOUP-LA" at Parsons Theatre in Hartford, Connecticut. (The production would be retitled "HEAD OVER HEELS" before opening August 29th, 1918 at George M. Cohan's Theatre in New York City and run for 100 performances.) ..... The musical starred the adorable MITZI HAJOS and featured MARTHA BOWES, MINA DAVENPORT, CARMEN GRANADA, DOROTHY MacKAYE, EARL AMOS, IRVING BEEBE, STANLEY RIDGES, BILLY KENT, DETMAR POPPEN, MABEL WILBER, DIXIE BLAIR, EDWARD SMITH, JAMES S. RYAN, LOUIE EMERY, JOE DUNN, JAMES BURNETT, ANDY WARD and EDDIE MATTHEWS ..... DETAILS: The sixteen page program measures 5 3/4" X 9 1/8" inches and includes production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes, list of musical numbers and wonderful vintage advertising, but no cast photos or bios ..... CUT SONGS: The list of musical numbers includes "Let Us Build a Nest" and "The Girl We Sang About Twenty-Five Years Ago" which were cut out-of-town ..... CONDITION: With the exception of light creasing, this rare playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian.
