Mindfulness for the Medical Laboratory Scientist: By Shelly & Nicole Norman MLS

Description: 123 page paperback book written for those working in the medical field. A 2020 study of 4,600 medical laboratory professionals published in the American Society of Clinical Pathology reveals that although respondents show high job satisfaction, “overall job-related stress is high and burnout is prevalent.”This book is written with the medical laboratory scientist in mind, but applies to everyone. In addition to the breathing exercises and body scans that you would expect to find in a book with “mindfulness” in the title, this book also touches on topics like mindful conflict resolution, imposter syndrome, mindful listening, radical acceptance, and dealing with death. Each topic has some “lab work” assignments. These are hands-on actions to get you started on implementing these techniques in your life. One yogi called it “a well-written and simple yet comprehensive collection.” From the opening chapter: "My daughter Nicole is a medical laboratory scientist (MLS). Until she started her second bachelor’s degree, I had no idea what that entailed.I never thought about the fact that after a phlebotomist drew my blood, someone cross matched it and scrutinized it under a microscope (analyzing cells that look deceptively like other cells). And that same person would calibrate sophisticated — and sometimes finicky — laboratory equipment. I didn’t know the word hematology or understand that “on the bench” does not mean sitting out an inning in baseball. I had no idea the amount of effort it took to pass a college-level chemistry test, let alone the months of preparation that go into sitting for The Board of Certification exam.Until she was on the job, I didn’t know the toll that working a night shift can take on a person’s body. I didn’t understand the anxiety filling an MTP (massive transfusion protocol) would cause. I didn’t anticipate the loss she would feel when a patient she has never met, and knows only by a series of numbers on test tubes, passes away on the floor.I did not appreciate the unseen army of medical professionals in the backroom of the frontline. Now I do. The American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science gives this definition: Medical laboratory science professionals are “vital healthcare detectives uncovering and providing laboratory information from laboratory analyses that assist physicians in patient diagnosis and treatment …. .” I love the imagery of “vital healthcare detectives!” I also love their description of how you do your job. “We use sophisticated biomedical instrumentation and technology, computers and methods requiring manual dexterity, to perform laboratory testing on blood and body fluids. Laboratory testing encompasses such disciplines as clinical chemistry, hematology, immunology, immunohematology, microbiology, and molecular biology.”Whew. It’s a big job. A big, demanding, challenging — and usually fulfilling job. But, you already knew that. In a YouTube interview called "These Unprecedented Times," Dr. E. Blair Holladay, CEO of the American Society of Clinical Pathology talks about burnout many of you feel in your job and notes that it’s “not just with our profession, laboratory medicine. We have 100,000 members in our own organization and there is a massive issue of burnout. In fact, it’s rampant throughout all of medical right now.” (Understandable. This was recorded on Sept. 23, 2020, during the pandemic.) It is with awe and appreciation that I write a book to help my amazing daughter, and her fellow MLS professionals, keep the intense energy that is inherent in your profession in check so that it is working for you, not against you.
