Description: Cover issued by the Smithsonian Institution, National Air and Space Museum, to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the first non-stop round-the-world flight. This is Number 6 in a series commemorating Milestones of Flight. The first non-stop round-the-world flight was made from July 15 to July 22, 1933, by Wiley Post in his plane, the "Winnie Mae". The addressed cover is stamped with the 8 cent flag over the White House stamp (Scott #1338F). The stamp was canceled at Oklahoma City, OK, on July 15, 1973, forty years after the commencement of the flight. The cachet, printed in black ink, shows an image of the airplane, the "Winnie Mae" circling the globe, and an image of the head of Wiley Post. Above the cachet are the words: "Smithsonian Institution / National Air and Space Museum / Milestones of Flight Commemorative Series / Number 6". Below the cachet are the words: "40th Anniversary / First Solo Round-the-World Flight /Wiley Post in the "Winnie Mae" / July 15-22, 1933" An enclosed insert printed on both sides gives a brief description of the historic flight including information about the Lockheed Model 5-C "Vega" aircraft. It also talks about other accomplishments of Wiley Post while flying the "Winnie Mae" both before and after the globe-circling flight. The cover has never been sealed.
