Description: Description: A pair of Postmodern screenprints by architect Michael Graves (1934-2015), designed for the Walt Disney Company. The theme is representations of Mickey Mouse in abstract silhouette forms. on patterned backgrounds which look like printed paper squares randomly stacked. They're framed in identical Graves-designed frames, painted matte gray with corner cleats in the form of Mickey's head in terracotta. These were designed by Graves near the beginning of his involvement with the Walt Disney Co. He had designed the Swan and Dolphin hotels which were completed in 1990 and was about to embark on an extensive campaign of industrial design work for the company, creating upmarket home goods and eventually kitchenware incorporating the iconic Mickey Mouse design. These prints were likely a test run of some of the design ideas which would show up in those products. I believe they were offered through the Disney Store catalog, as a halo product. These prints were sold in an unsigned edition, unframed, and in this limited edition in a couple of styles of frame, of which these are the least common. Size: Frames are 29.5" square. Sight (openings) are 24" square. Mark: Signed "Graves '91" lower left; numbered 202/1000A and 202/1000B Labels on the back of both reading, "Frame exclusively design for the Walt Disney Company by Michael Graves. Manufactured by Architectural Products, Inc. ©Disney." Condition: Frames have some minor wear along edges, one with larger spot of damage. Otherwise fine.
