Description: Dawn Redwood Metasequoia sp. Late Cretaceous – Hell Creek Fm. Garfield Co., MT It’s amazing how a 60-million-year-old fossil can be basically identical to a modern one but this is the case with this Metasequoia sp. cone, preserved in limonite /hematite. It comes from the Late Cretaceous of Montana. This cone measures roughly 20 mm in length, and comes in a labeled Perky Box. Once though extinct since the Miocene, a stand of living Metasequoia was found in China in the 1940’s. They were quickly dubbed as living fossils. Metasequoia today grow to over 150 ft, have been planted the world over, and are a conifer that drops its needles in winter. Note to International Buyers: For Fossil and Mineral Specimens, I always use the Customs Code 9705.00.00.91 which is for fossil and mineral collectables.
