Description: Feeble-Mindedness its Causes and Consequences, Henry Goddard, PHd, Copyright 1914. Published July 1914. Title page shows date of 1920. The book was dedicated to Edward R. Johnstone, Superintendent of the Training School at Vineland, "whose devotion to the interests of those whose minds have not developed normally prompted the establishment of this Department of Research [at the Vineland Research Laboratory.]" The author examines 327 cases "of all ages and grades of defect." An early exploration of mental illnesses undertaken with the interests of the doctors, patients, students, "parents and teachers" in mind. See photos 8&9, Table of Content, for more information on the content of this book. The book is in fair to good shape overall. The gilded lettering on the spine is in very good condition. The cover boards themselves are mostly clean with little edge wear but with some minor scuff marks on the back cover. Most noticeably there is a what appears to be a small, double water mark on the front cover above the book title. The binding is intact but somewhat loose. Both front and back hinges are slightly cracked with a portion of the netting showing on the back hinge. The pages are bound firmly except pages199-202 and 167-170 are separated from the binding, but with no other damage. The pages have a slight yellow tint from age. All pages are clean and clear, except a name (M.L. Burdick) is stamped on the 1st page behind the front cover. There is also what looks like a date of 2-21-22 penciled in on the upper right corner of that page. The same name is stamped on the edge of the pages at the top of the book. Note: The lighting on the cover at the time these photos were taken makes the cover look much brighter blue than it actually is. The color of the spine is more accurate.
