Description: MELLO KINGS Baby Tell Me / The Only A Girl HERALD 511 Original 1958 First Pressing DICK LEVISTER SIGNED DETAILS: Original first pressing by the Mello-Kings on Herald Records autographed by their manager and accompanist Dick Levister. Levister is considered by many to have been the sixth memeber of the quintette vocal group. The group originally called the Mellotones formed in 1956 at George Washington High School in Mount Vernon, New York under the guidance of Dick Levister. What is unique about there relationship was that Levister was African American and the boys were all white. During the 1950's era this type of bi-racial relationship was unheard of! Levister was insrumental in the groups success. He designed the visual appearance of the group with there trademark white jackets. He was crucial to there signing a record deal with Al Sharp's Herald Records in 1957. He renamed them the Mello-Kings when they discovered another band named the Mello-Tones. But most important of all he helped develop the groups classic Black doo wop sound. Fans of the time could no believe that the group was comprised of white members! Because of Levisters contributions they were the first white vocal group to cross the racial sound barrier. Record is hand signed with an inscription.
