Description: GRAND DUCHESS MARIA PAVLOVNA OF RUSSIA1. A PRINCESS IN EXILE -- Hardback Book in Very Good Condition Published by The Viking Press; New York: 19322. EDUCATION OF A PRINCESS: A MEMOIR -- Hardback Book in Good ConditionPublished by Blue Ribbon Books; New York: 1930FROM A SMOKE-FREE HOME GRAND DUCHESS MARIA PAVLOVNA OF RUSSIA (1990--1958) was a granddaughter of Alexander II of Russia. She was a paternal first cousin of Nicholas II (Russia's last Tsar) and Marie of Edinburgh (consort of Ferdinand I of Romania) and maternal first cousin of George II, Alexander, and Paul (all kings of Greece) and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (consort of Elizabeth II). She was also both the first grandchild of George I of Greece and the first great-grandchild of his father Christian IX of Denmark. Her early life was marked by the death of her mother and her father's banishment from Russia when he remarried a commoner in 1902. Grand Duchess Maria and her younger brother Dmitri (later involved in the assassination of Rasputin) remained very close throughout her life, were raised in Moscow by their paternal uncle Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich and his wife Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna of Russia, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria. In 1908 Maria Pavlovna married Prince Wilhelm, Duke of Sodermanland. The couple had one son, Prince Lennart, Duke of Smaland, later Count Bernadotte of Wisborg. The marriage was unhappy and ended in divorce in 1914. During World War I, Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna served as a nurse until the fall of the Russian monarchy in February 1917. In September 1917, during the period of the Russian Provisional Government, she married Prince Sergei Putyatin. They had one son, Prince Roman Sergeievich Putyatin, who died in infancy. The couple escaped revolutionary Russia through Ukraine in July 1918. In exile, Grand Duchess Maria lived briefly in Bucharest and London, then she settled in Paris in 1920. In the 1920s, she opened Kitmir, an embroidering fashion atelier that achieved some level of success. In 1923 she divorced her second husband, and after selling Kitmir in 1928, she emigrated to the United State. While living in New York City she published [the two books below]. In 1942, Grand Duchess Maria moved to Argentina where she spent the years of World War II. She returned permanently to Europe in 1949. She died in Konstanz, Germany in 1958.1. A PRINCESS IN EXILE -- Here we have a hardback book that measures 9.5" x 6.5" and has 306 pages. Condition: This an almost 100-year-old hardback book is in excellent condition for its age. The pages show no rips, writing, stains or folds. The binding is intact and there are no loose or missing pages. The cover shows a little staining and some wear at the corners and edges. You can also see a small puncture at the corner back fold of the spine. Although not very noticeable, there is an embossed bookplate at the corner of the frontispiece. Please see the above pix and judge for yourself the condition of this book.2. EDUCATION OF A PRINCESS--A Memoir -- This is a hardback book that measures 8.5" X 5.75" and has 388 pages. Condition: Here is another almost 100-year-old hardback book. However, it's showing its age more than Princess in Exile. The pages are still in good shape--no rips, writing or folds. But there is noticeable yellowing/foxing to some of the pages--especially at the outside edges. The binding is still intact and there are no loose or missing pages. The black covers are probably masking some grime and staining. You can see them clearly at the spine edge. Not surprisingly you will see wear and tear at the corners and some edges. Please take a look at the pictures and judge for yourself the condition of this book.I'm slowly starting to part with some of my history/biography (mostly royalty) of England, Russia and some European countries from the period 2nd half of the 19th century thru the Russian Revolution. I got more taken with the period, than with the book I thought I would write. Now that I am in down-sizing mode, a lot of these books must go. So, if this period (and it does cover a lot of ground) is of interest to you, please check back with me in the weeks (and probably months) to come. Many of the books that I bought were used and not expensive, so I'll be bundling a lot of them in order not to be at this forever. Shipping will be via USPS Media Mail. THESE BOOKS WILL BE WRAPPED AND BOXED FOR SHIPPING.Thanks for checking out my listing.
