MARGARET BOURKE-WHITE - AUTOGRAPHED SIGNED CHECK 04/18/1935 - HFSID 202285 MARGARET BOURKE-WHITE She signs on this check for $10.00 to S. Kindstrand Check Signed: "Margaret Bourke-White", 8½x3. New York, 1935 April 18. Filled out by world's first official female photojournalist on her "Bourke-White Studio" account at The Chase National Bank, payable to S. Kindstrand for $10. Bourke-White, who was known for her industrial photographs had captured the attention of Henry R. Luce, who first hired her as a staff photographer for "Fortune" magazine in 1929 and then as one of four staff photographers for "Life". In 1937, Bourke-White and novelist Erskine Caldwell published You Have Seen Their Faces, the first of three books featuring her images and his words. The couple, who married in 1939 (and divorced in 1942), were in Moscow in 1941 when the Germans bombed the city. The event was documented in dramatic photographs sent to "Life" by Bourke-White, the first Western photographer allowed in the Soviet Union (1930) and the only foreign reporter in the country at the time. She is noted for her compelling images of WWII. Folds, vertical fold touches "t" in Margaret. Otherwise, fine condition.
