Louis de Bourbon, Cardinal de Vendome Letter Signed. One page, 10 x 8 ΒΌ inches, Paris; July 24, 1668. Letter addressed to the consuls of the city of Toulon congratulating them on their appointment to the position. Translated into English, it reads, in part, "I desire to testify to your predecessors my satisfaction on the Care of your people to fill the Consular Sages of your city during this year; and I must not hide from you that it is entirely by the hope that I have that you will give all your care to the service of the king and to the public good..." Signed, "Le Cardinal de Vendosme." Louis spent the first forty-five years of his life as a soldier and a bureaucrat. He held numerous titles, including Duke of Mercoeur, Duke of Vendome, Governor of Provence, Commander of the French Troops, and Viceroy of Catalonia. After his wife died in 1647, Louis removed himself from the secular world, joined the Church, and secluded himself in a Capuchin convent. He was elected Cardinal of Vendome ten years later. Condition: Creased along folds and lightly toned. Seal partially intact. Two small separations along the folds, not affecting text.
