My life was similar to that of many Chicanos from the late 50s and 60s. Through the media, I witnessed the historic events of that time, like the Civil Rights Movement, the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, and Dr. Martin Luther King. This left a lasting impression on me, and opened my eyes to the reality of injustice. The coverage the lettuce and grape boycotts in support of Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers call for the improvement of working conditions for the laborers made me aware of the injustices and attitudes towards the Mexicans. This changed the complexion of my entire life experience. I am proud to see the successes of Latinos that have broken their poverty cycle through education. As a people, we have only done so by standing on the shoulders of the courageous many that stood up for us back then. Today, as a nation, we refuse to import goods that are produced by child labor in foreign countries, and that is a good thing. However, in this day and age, we continue to allow child labor in the agricultural industry. The future for the children migrant farmworkers will remain bleak unless we act now.
