Description: Uncommon stereoview card Series American with the caption "LOS ANGELOS" (sic). Research online reveals this to depict Main & Temple Street in Los Angeles in 1871. The most visible sign belonged to Levy & Coblentz, Wholesale Liquor Dealers. From Archives of Water and Power Association: Original image is a stereographic card.Wagons crowd around the corner of Main and Temple on a Saturday afternoon. Levy & Coblentz, center where all the wagons are, were wholesale liquor dealers. Victor Ponet, whose sign is visible in the lower left, settled in Los Angeles in 1869, manufacturing mirrors and picture frames. The second building from the right is the Bella Union, the city's first and most famous hotel. It had served as the County Courthouse until October 1851, and in 1860 was the location of a champagne fete celebrating the connection of San Francisco and Los Angeles by telegraph.TypeImageFormat1 photograph :b&wPhotographic printsSubjectBella Union Hotel (Los Angeles, Calif.)Levy & Coblentz (Los Angeles, Calif.)Stores & shops--California--Los AngelesWagons--California--Los AngelesHorse-drawn vehicles--California--Los AngelesStreets--California--Los AngelesCentral business districts--California--Los AngelesCommercial buildings--California--Los AngelesMain Street (Los Angeles, Calif.)Temple Street (Los Angeles, Calif.)
