Description: LONGINES LINDBERGH WEEMS NAVIGATION WATCH"SWISSAIR EXCLUSIVE" REF 628.5241 STAINLESS STEEL Out of my own collection Longines are particularly known for their ‘Aviators’ range of watches. This venture started when Longines collaborated with Captain Philip van Horne Weems, and brought out the first pilot navigation watch bearing his name. After Charles Lindbergh’s transatlantic flight in 1927, Lindbergh set out to update and improve the Weems watch, based on his experience of flying over the Atlantic. He explained to Longines what he needed from a navigational watch, and the watchmakers went to work, with Charles Lindbergh giving his stamp of approval on the final product. In 1931, the Longines Lindbergh watch was born. Longines gained huge publicity through their association with Charles Lindbergh, selling the watch to working pilots and the adoring public alike. The present watch is a special numbered edition made by Longines for Swissair. Age: presumably between 1990 and 2000. Case: waterproof in stainless steel with sealed caseback with transparent porthole. Features the following engravings: WEEMS NAVIGATION WATCH – SWISSAIR EXCLUSIVE MADE BY LONGINES – Special edition – WATER RESISTANT – 628.5241 – STAINLESS STEEL – REGIST. MOD. – SWISS MADE – TIME ZONE – NO. 3552. Original onion crown. Case dimensions: net diameter 38 mm (excluding crown) x 44 mm (from handle to handle)., Dial: original and free of defects, two-tone white ceramic / silver with black markers printed with Arabic numerals. Graphic printed in black with track closed small parts. Leaf spheres in burnished steel. At 12 o’clock: Longines lettering. At 6 o’clock: automatic – 628 Swiss 5241. Movement: mechanical with automatic winding, Longines L. 628.1 (Eta 2892), fully functional as a watch and in its functions. Glass: flat mineral sapphire. Band: Brown ostrich handmade leather. The watch is in exceptional storage conditions, with no obvious signs but very light signs demonstrating a modest use mostly concentrated to the band. I do not have the original case or paperwork. I guarantee the authenticity of the watch as I bought it myself years and years ago for my own collection, which I'm now dissolving. Please also see my other listings.
