The text below is for information only and is from the opposite separate page it cannot be supplied with the print - All spelling subject to the OCR program used London from Waterloo BridgeA view of the City looking towards Blackfriars Bridge and the Thames Embankment. The dome of St. Paul's Cathedral is conspicuous on the right and, on the left, that of the Central Criminal Court (the Old Bailey) which stands on the site of Newgate Gaol. Just to the left of it is the steeple of St. Bride's Church, Fleet St., built by Wren in 1671. Between these two landmarks and the river, trees mask the buildings of the Middle and inner Temple, legal societies, constituted like the colleges of a university, which established themselves here in the fourteenth century in buildings belonging to the recently dissolved Order of the Knights Templars. Here too, are the Temple gardens where Shakespeare placed the ominous picking of the red and white roses (Henry IV, Part I, Act II, Sc. 4). Several great houses, including the Savoy Palace, stood beside the river west of the Temple, each with access to the waterway by stairs, of which Essex Stairs is a relic. All memory of the old irregular shore with its exposed mud-banks at low tide was swept away in 1864 with the building of the Thames Embankment. The lighters at moorings in mid-stream are laden with goods in transhipment between vessels lying in the Pool and warehouses on the South Bank.
