Description: U-2 Dragon Lady " width="100%" height="90" border="0"> U-2 Dragon Lady DVD Video (w/ digital copy of Pilot's Handbook) Description Loose Cannon is proud to preserve the USA's military history via its unique DVD film collections. Using a combination of U.S. Dept. of Defense archive films, combat footage, and period newsreels of the time, each film features actual wartime footage and or first-person accounts from those that were there. The Lockheed U-2, nicknamed "Dragon Lady", is an American single-engine, high altitude reconnaissance aircraft operated from the 1950s by the United States Air Force or the Central Intelligence Agency. It provides day and night, high-altitude (70,000 feet, 21,300 meters), all-weather intelligence gathering. Lockheed Corporation originally proposed it in 1953, it was approved in 1954, and its first test flight was in 1955. It was flown during the Cold War over the Soviet Union, China, Vietnam, and Cuba. In 1960, Gary Powers was shot down in a CIA U-2C over the Soviet Union by a surface-to-air missile (SAM). Major Rudolf Anderson Jr. was shot down in a U-2 during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. It still serves in the Air Force to this day, and was used in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. This DVD contains the following SEVEN movies: - Shootdown Crisis 1960 Newreels from May 1960 outline the events of the Francis Gary Powers shootdown over Russia, which disrupted the scheduled U.S.-Soviet Summit talks. (6 min) - Air Force News Review 1960 1960 review of Air Force equipment and activities, selected portion on the usage of a specially modified U-2 for nuclear testing monitoring of airborne radioactive particles. (3 min) - Angels in Paradise According to the CIA, this secret film was made for family members of those working on the U-2 spy plane program to inform them about the remote location and difficulty of working at Area 51, a U.S. military installation in Nevada. The film tells the story of the design, manufacture, and testing of the top secret U-2 plane between 1954 and 1960. “Angel” was a code word for the plane, which could fly at over 70,000 feet, and “Paradise” was a nickname for Area 51. (21 min) - NASA Aeronautics and Space 1973 This historic NASA film shows the agency's highlights of 1973 including the Skylab space station as well as both the U-2, and SR-71 recon aircraft. (14 min) - Dragon Lady: The U-2 / TR-1 US Air Force recruitment film for U-2 and TR-1 reconnaissance jet pilots. Outstanding production and photography, plus actual mission footage make this the most insightful film yet on the U-2. They are believed to date to 1972 and show tests of the camera system known as "Trixie", takeoffs and landings (including drag parachute assisted landings).
